The Cloister
..........As soon as we pass the entrance through the
ancient gate on our left we find the cloister, a pretty
small courtyard in Arab-Sicilian-Norman style. Above the
central arch we note two wild boar heads surrounded by a
terracotta frame which recalls the heraldic coat of arms
of Lord Grimthorpe. Having partly disintegrated, it was
restored between 1910 and 1913 according to che original
plan and embellished with ornamental elements and enriched
all around and on the walls with marble fragments,
terracotta, basreliefs, wooden and marble statues together
with other sacred and profane medieval antiques. Among
them we point out three basreliefs of great importance
from France: the seven mortal sins, the nine Norman
warriors, the Deposition and a terracotta tile by Luca
Della Robbia.
.A few steps divide us from the crypt, an open gallery in
gothic style. This is a rare and daring construction built
on the model of a Cisternian abbey, Fountain abbey of
Malton (Yorkshire), luogo di origine di Lord Grimthorpe.
